WHO ARE WE HELPING?
The Fertility Meter is useful for women and couples who are:
|
As a user of the fertility meter I found it very helpful for understanding my fertility and making decisions regarding conceiving or not conceiving a child. My husband and I had been using NFP prior to using the monitor and preferred a drug free and non-invasive way of planning our family. |
THE SCIENCE
As the egg grows in the ovary and ovulation approaches, the amount of oestrogen (the female hormone - E) increases substantially to reach a peak and then falls. Thus, rising levels of E give advanced warning that ovulation is imminent and conception is possible.
Once ovulation has occurred, increasing levels of progesterone (P) are produced. When these have reached a specified level (the threshold level or cut-off value), pregnancy cannot occur until the beginning of the next period (the first day of bleeding). The Fertility Meter measures these changes in hormone levels by quantitative tests for E1G and PdG and can do so throughout the menstrual cycle. It provides an accurate indication of the time of ovulation and times of fertility and infertility. |
FURTHER DEVELOPMENT
To complete The Fertility Meter, The Health and Fertility Foundation requires funding for four areas:
Secure the Science
Professor Len Blackwell has over thirty-five years of knowledge, expertise and data from researching fertility and developing The Fertility Meter in collaboration with the late Professor Jim Brown in Melbourne and scientists around the world. An important goal is to pass Dr Blackwell’s expertise to his fellow scientist, Dr Delwyn Cooke, who has helped develop the technology and is ready to take over the research.

Complete the Research and Development.
The Fertility Meter exists as a prototype capable of measuring fertility hormones in the urine. The prototype is well-proven and the research goal is to produce The Fertility Meter ready for distribution. The Development Path is as follows:
The Fertility Meter exists as a prototype capable of measuring fertility hormones in the urine. The prototype is well-proven and the research goal is to produce The Fertility Meter ready for distribution. The Development Path is as follows:
- Improve the testing kit which detects the hormones in the urine.
- Modernise the measuring device (reader) that reads the test kit and predicts fertility.
- Simplify the method of taking urine samples for testing.
- Produce The Fertility Meter (comprising the test kit and reader).
- Conduct final trials.
- Distribute The Fertility Meter to women for use in the home.
- Provide educational material on reproduction, fertility, and use of the Meter.
Distribute the Meter
Arrangements will be made with suitable companies to distribute The Fertility Meter world-wide to clinics and women at home. The Foundation will sponsor the cost of some Meters for those families who cannot afford this type of technology.

Disseminate the Knowledge
Every woman has a different fertility cycle and women want to know their cycle. Over 60 years of research on the menstrual cycle will be collated into educational material to be made available on the website where assistance with interpretation will be available. Women using The Fertility Meter will be able to compare their data with other women whose data has already been collected and is stored in databases (over a million tests) through a smart phone app. Through education and monitoring every woman will know with complete confidence when they are fertile and when they are not.
